ACT to Deliver Pumped Two-Phase System for SAIC Advanced Inverter Cooling Demonstration Project

Posted on April 2, 2007

Lancaster, Pennsylvania - April 2, 2007 - Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc. (ACT) has been awarded a contract by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) to deliver a multiple-evaporator pumped two-phase system for cooling high power inverters.

This Advanced Inverter Cooling Demonstration Project is in support of the U.S. Army's Power & Energy Program to improve the performance and packaging of hybrid electric vehicle subsystems. SAIC is the lead organization on this project.

This contract is being fulfilled by ACT's Technology Development Group. The baseline technology is ACT's Hybrid Two-Phase Loop (HPTL) technology that combines mechanical pumps with capillary wicks to achieve reliable liquid supply and distribution in high heat flux areas. ACT has, in the past several years, been actively developing this technology through a number of SBIR (Small Business Innovative Research) and internally funded projects.

The previous efforts substantially raised the technology readiness level and led to this demonstration project with SAIC. Under this project, ACT will deliver a multiple-evaporator Hybrid Two-Phase Loop that is integrated with an advanced inverter design.

Dr. Chanwoo Park, a Group Leader of Technology Development at ACT, is the Principal Investigator for the SAIC contract. "This is a great follow up to our highly successful Army SBIR Phase II project", said Dr. Park, "We expect to further enhance our commercialization efforts through this project."

ACT is a developer and manufacturer of advanced heat pipes, pumped liquid and two-phase loops, and thermal storage devices. ACT specializes in technology development and custom thermal product design and manufacturing. ACT's technologies have been used in applications from spacecraft thermal control to catalytic reactor cooling to medical surgery temperature control. ACT currently serves customers worldwide in Aerospace, Military, Industrial Equipment, Consumer Products, and Government R&D markets. More than ten of these customers are in the Fortune Global 500 list.
