ACT Thermal Solutions onboard Maxar Space’s Vehicle for NASA Psyche Mission
[Lancaster, PA] — NASA’s groundbreaking Psyche mission, aimed at exploring an asteroid that could unlock the mysteries of the solar system’s history, has contracted with Advanced Cooling Technologies (ACT) to implement innovative thermal management solutions utilizing Constant Conductance Heat Pipes (CCHPs) to transport heat from electronics to radiators., Maxar Space, the prime contractor on the program, contracted ACT and integrated the CCHPs into their space flight system.
The Psyche mission is led by Arizona State University. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, is responsible for the mission’s overall management, system engineering, integration and test, and mission operations. The mission launched on October 13th on a journey to investigate Psyche 16, a metallic asteroid located in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Psyche 16 is unique in that it is believed to be composed almost entirely of metal, making it a potential remnant core of a planetesimal that never fully formed.
“We are excited to collaborate with Maxar Space on the Psyche mission and contribute our expertise in thermal management,” said Bryan Muzyka, Vice President, Sales and Marketing at ACT. “Our CCHPs have a proven track record of success in demanding space environments, and we are confident that they will enable Maxar and NASA to be successful on this important exploratory mission”

**About NASA Psyche Mission:**
The NASA Psyche mission is led by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and aims to explore Psyche 16, an asteroid believed to be a metallic remnant core of a planetesimal. By studying Psyche, the mission seeks to gain insights into the formation and evolution of planetary bodies in the early solar system.
Maxar Space is a world-class space technology and manufacturing company, trusted partner and innovator, delivered the Solar Electric Propulsion (SEP) Chassis to NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for the NASA Discovery Mission, Psyche. The SEP Chassis is based on Maxar’s 1300-class platform, the world’s most trusted spacecraft, which provided NASA the opportunity to budget, design and build the historic Psyche mission on flight-proven, commercially developed hardware.
