The theater lighting industry is a niche market with a few key players facing unique industry challenges. A global leading manufacturer of theater lighting equipment reached out to ACT to help design a high performance, low noise cooling solution for their latest LED product line.
Solution
ACT proposed a Pumped Two-Phase cooling solution to meet the high thermal demands of this LED application. A pumped two-phase (P2P) solution provided the customer with the highest level of thermal performance while maintaining a low noise (<35dB) design. Pumped two-phase cooling is a highly efficient liquid cooling solution in which the working fluid actually boils as it flows across the heated components. This boiling process is highly efficient and is capable of removing large amounts of heat with little temperature rise. A major benefit in this application over a more traditional liquid cooling solution is that P2P requires significantly less pumping power which results is less pump noise and lower energy consumption.
Another important aspect of the design for this customer was the ability of the system to operate in all orientations. Any pumped liquid cooling solution requires that the liquid reservoir be sufficiently above the pump to provide the necessary liquid flow. In this application the reservoir could not be guaranteed to be above the pump because of the various potential operating orientations. ACT developed a tilt-tolerant reservoir design that allows the pump to be supplied with sufficient fluid in any orientation. The result was a low noise, high performance, tilt-tolerant cooling solution.
