Technology Diversification through R&D contract wins

Technology Diversification through R&D contract wins

Lancaster, Pennsylvania – January 13, 2020. Advanced Cooling Technologies, Inc. (ACT) announced today that it is continuing its rapid technology diversification through multiple R&D contract wins.  In 2019 and early 2020 ACT was awarded over 15 new contracts, totaling more than 5 million dollars, through government-funded Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR), Small Business Technology Transfer Program (STTR) and Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) programs.  These contracts were awarded from several different government agencies, including DOE, DOD (Air Force, Navy, Defense Logistics Agency), NASA, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  According to Dr. Richard Bonner, Vice President of R&D at ACT, “These awards demonstrate ACT’s commitment to satisfying the future thermal needs of our customers through innovation.  We are also thankful that our many sponsors throughout the government agencies continue to see the value in pursuing these high risk, high reward research and development programs.”   More information on ACT’s R&D can be found at https://www.1-act.com/innovations/, and ACT’s technical papers https://www.1-act.com/resources/tech-papers/.

Notable examples of recent awards include:

  • NASA MIRO 3D Manufacturing.  The NASA MIRO program is designed to increase the participation of minorities and women in STEM activities. During the program, ACT will work with the University of D.C. on 3D printed devices, while mentoring and hiring U. of D.C. students.
  • Electrically Isolated Hybrid Two-Phase Cooling System (DOE SBIR)
  • Large Eddy Simulation (LES) Flow Solver Suitable for Modeling Conjugate Heat Transfer (Navy STTR)
  • Advanced Cooling Options for MIDS Terminals (Navy SBIR)
  • Advanced Hot Reservoir Variable Conductance Heat Pipes (VCHPs) for Planetary Landers (NASA STTR)
  • Recovery of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) from NdFeB Magnet Powders (DOD Defense Logistics Agency)
  • Flexible Coal Power Plant Operation with Thermal Energy Storage (DOE BAA)
  • A Novel Process Modeling Framework for Linear Friction Welding (Air Force SBIR)

This year (2020), ACT has continued to expand its R&D into new areas such as:

  • Advanced Computational Modeling (https://www.1-act.com/innovations/advanced-modeling/)
  • Combustion and Nanoparticle Enhanced Fuels (https://www.1-act.com/stabilized-nanofluids-for-enhanced-combustion-energy/)
  • Pumped Two Phase Cooling (https://www.1-act.com/innovations/advanced-pumped-two-phase-cooling/)
  • Thermal Storage (https://www.1-act.com/case-studies/super-cool-satellite-thermal-control-system/)

Many of ACT’s R&D programs are in collaboration with industrial and academic partners.  Some of the academic partners in the past year include: Case Western Reserve University, Lehigh University, Texas A&M, University of D.C, University of New Haven, and The University of Southern California.

In 2011, ACT was awarded a Tibbets award from the Small Business Administration (SBA).  SBA presents the awards nationally to small companies and individuals that have advanced technical innovation and economic growth through its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program.  “Many of ACT’s products were initially developed on SBIR and STTR programs.  Copper-Water Heat Pipes for spacecraft thermal control (https://www.1-act.com/case-studies/copperwater-heat-pipes-and-hik-plates-for-spacecraft-applications/) were originally developed on a NASA Marshall Phase II SBIR, while ICE-Lok™ (https://www.1-act.com/products/ice-lok-thermally-enhanced-wedgelock/) an enhanced Wedgelock, was developed on an Air Force SBIR.” said Dr. William Anderson, Chief Engineer for R&D at ACT.  “We continue to commercialize SBIR research, recently expanding our two-phase cooling product line (https://www.1-act.com/products/pumped-two-phase-cooling-solutions/) which was originally funded by an NSF SBIR.  www.sbir.gov has ranked ACT in the 95th percentile for commercializing SBIR/STTR programs.”
