Enclosure Cooling for Trackside Cabinet Thermal Management

Safeguarding critical rail systems with trackside enclosure cooling

In the rail transport industry, trackside sealed enclosure cooling must be rugged and compact to endure extreme temperatures, vibration, contaminants, and other harsh conditions. Sensitive equipment such as switches and signal controls are housed trackside in NEMA 4 or 4X protective cabinets. These cabinets, exposed to the elements, are at risk of high internal temperatures, endangering the electronics inside. The failure of these electronics can be catastrophic, particularly when critical automation controls are involved.

A customer approached ACT with a critical issue involving a railway trackside enclosure experiencing severe overheating. Internal temperatures soared to 190°F, while external ambient temperatures dropped to -15°F. This posed a significant risk, as failure of the internal electronics could be catastrophic to railway operations. The challenge was further compounded by the extremely limited space inside the cabinet for a cooling solution. A compact, energy efficient trackside sealed enclosure cooling system was the solution.

ACT-TEC Thermoelectric Enclosure Coolers

ACT’s TEC-90, one of the different types of sealed enclosure coolers developed by Advanced Cooling Technologies, was an ideal solution for this trackside enclosure cooling application. With the NEMA 4 rated seal, the cooling capacity of 90 Watts, and minimal cabinet space needed. It had all the features the customer needed to keep this enclosure free of contaminants, below maximum operating temperature and it fit in their tight cabinet constraints.

ACT’s sealed enclosure cooling units are the ideal thermal management solution for both trackside and on-board enclosure cooling. They provide NEMA-rated sealing, vital to keeping important electronics free from dirt and debris, and protected from extreme environmental conditions and high internal temperatures.

These user-friendly units are easy to install which makes for a quick installation into any cabinet, with a variety of models available to suit any configuration.
